The Ethiopian Heart Association held a workshop with the title “Progress and Prospect of Cardiovascular Care in Ethiopia” on March 24th, 2023 . The workshop was co-organized by the Ministry of Health, Addis Ababa University and Mid Year Conference’. The workshop aimed at expanding the scarce cardiac services in Ethiopia by bringing together various stakeholders of the system, including the Ministry of Health, other cardiac associations, public and private cardiac centers and officials from the financial sectors.
During the workshops studies on “Burden of Heart Disease in Ethiopia” and “Factors to consider in resource allocation for health” were presented by Dr Bekele Alemayehu and Solomon Tessema Memirie, MD, PhD. while Dr, Shibikom Tamirat highlighted the history of cardiac surgery and percutaneous interventions in Ethiopia: successes and challenges.
Following the workshop, there was a discussion on potential solutions to increase access to cardiac services in Ethiopia, where medical professionals and members of the Ethiopian Heart Association raised concerns associated with developing a decentralized healthcare system, resource allocation, ease of import for required medical equipments and medicine.
Dr Ermias Mulatu form the Ministry of Health addressed the questions raised by the workshop participants mentioning the Ministry is developing a new roadmap that will help with decentralizing healthcare services and setting priorities for allocating resources.
